BACK-UP/RESTORE DATABASES

These instructions will explain how you can backup your database/s in Bodhi5. If you do not have Bodhi5 installed on your computer, please refer to this tutorial: .

In version 5 of Bodhi5 we have added a utility for backing up your database/s. This utility by default, will remind you every 30-days to do a backup.

Bodhi5: Backup reminder

If you answer Yes it will backup your historical data directories and any Portfolio's you've created in BodhiGold 5. By default, this backup is stored on your c:\ drive in a Backup directory (c:\Backup). We advise that you backup to an external drive or USB flash drive so if your hard drive fails you will still have a working backup.

The purpose of this feature is to backup your current database format/s so if you have a computer crash or corrupt your data you have a restore point. However, please be informed that you can always purchase an from our offices [07 3821 5177] if required.

What do you want to do?:

Change the drive where the data is backed up
  Backup Drive Information

Ensure that you connect your external hard drive or insert the flash drive into your USB before opening Bodhi5.
If you have inserted your backup drive after you've opened Bodhi5 you'll need to exit the software and reopen it so it can display this drive in the drop-down box.

By default the backup files are placed on your c:\ drive in a Backup directory. Obviously, if you have a hard drive crash you will lose your backup. For this reason we advise that you backup to an external drive. This could be either a USB flash drive or another computer [over your network] or a removable hard drive that is connected to this computer.
This external drive will display on your computer as a different drive [i.e. E:\ or F:\ etc.]. You will need to know this drive to continue with these instructions.
(❗) Note - If you don't have an external drive then you will need to copy your c:\Backup directory onto a CD-ROM.

  1. Open Bodhi5. Go to Edit then Options.

    Bodhi5: Edit > Options

  2. The Properties box will appear. Click on the General tab.

    Bodhi5: Select the General tab

  3. In the Backup Data section on the General tab choose the Drive where your external drive is located.

    Bodhi5: Select your Backup Drive
(❗) Note about external drives - Please be aware that if you remove external drives or add more external devices to USB ports on your computer, you may find that when you plug the external drive back in, that a different drive letter has been allocated to it.

  4. You can also change the frequency of reminders by editing the number in the Warn if over ?? days box. Remember that you can only download 6-months of data from our servers so make sure the number you enter here is less than 180. If you set this to 0 days the warning message will no longer appear automatically and you will have to manually do your backups.

Creating a backup using Bodhi5
If you want to manually do a backup of your database/s in Bodhi5, do the following:

  1. Open Bodhi5.
  2. Go to Tidy then Data then Backup.

    Bodhi5: Tidy > Data > Backup

  3.   Backup Drive Information

Ensure that you connect your external hard drive or insert the flash drive into your USB before opening Bodhi5.
If you have inserted your backup drive after you've opened Bodhi5 you'll need to exit the software and reopen it so it can display this drive in the drop-down box.

  4. Select your backup drive from the drop-down box then click the [OK] button.

    Bodhi5: Select your backup drive
(❗) Note - If you download a lot of data into multiple directories and formats this may take some time. You can not cancel this procedure once it has started.

  5. Bodhi5 will start backing up all your data to a Backup\*Todays date* [YYYYMMDD] directory on your hard drive or external back up device.

    Bodhi5: Backing up data files
The bottom status bar will keep you updated with your backups progress.

Where are my backup files saved?:
All backup files are copied to a Backup/*YYYYMMDD* directory on your backup drive (as set in the Edit>Options>Properties>General screen or selected from the drop-down box in step 3 above). For example, if you did a backup on 31-Dec-2016 and you've set your backup drive to E: then Bodhi5 would have created the following directory - E:\Backup\20161231. If you do another one on the 31-Jan-2017, Bodhi5 will add a - E:\Backup\20170131 directory.
When you restore from a backup, you can choose any time point you wish to restore from. It is wise to store a few different backups in case you have a problem in your data that you didn't notice straight away.
