All symbols listed in the BodhiGold Product Manager lists have a family code. A family code is simply the underlying company code for that instrument.
For example, on the Australian Stock Exchange we have a family code of BOQ. This code represents all the instruments that are traded for the company 'Bank of Queensland'. The graphic below shows the BOQ instruments listed in the ASX Equities. BOQ is the underlying company code and any other instruments (in this case preference shares) begin with this code.
If you follow Exchange Traded Options this family coding comes in extremely handy. Currently we have over 15000 put and call options trading on the Australian Stock Exchange. It could take up a lot of hard drive space and considerable time to follow all these codes. For this reason we suggest that traders select only the options they are interested in following.
To do this, you could go through the list and tick them individually, however there are two flaws to this plan:
- Some companies have hundreds of put and call options trading at once - that's a lot of ticking!.
- You would have to go into this list regularly to see if you want to add any newly listed options.
The easiest way around these two problems is to select families of options. This ensures two things: not too much ticking and any new options (in these families) will be exported automatically without any input from you. To learn how to export families in BodhiGold, read the follow example.
Downloading the BOQ Family of Options
For this example we are going to select the BOQ (Bank of Queensland) family of options. At the time of writing this tutorial BOQ only had a September 2005 and November 2005 series of options trading.
- Open BodhiGold and click the Configure button.
- In the Finance tab, double-click on Australia then Australian Stock Exchange.
- Click on Option, the Product Manager will appear displaying a current list of all individual options. ASX options are assigned a 5 letter code by the exchange. The first 3 letters represent the underlying security code or family code (BOQ) whilst the fourth & fifth character represents the clearing code.
- We now need to change this list so it is displaying only the family codes. We do this by right-clicking on the list to display the Style button.
- Click the Style button to bring up the Style dialog box then select Families and exit the box. The list will now be refreshed and displaying the family codes for each series of options. Family codes are listed with the 3-letter Exchange Code and an asterix.
By ticking any of these codes you are choosing to export all the individual options that currently trade or will trade in the future for this family.
