Update a group of ranked stocks

These instructions will explain how to select a group of symbols by ranking. If you do not have BodhiGold installed on your computer, please refer to this tutorial:  Installing BodhiGold

Information for Trial Users:
Users trialing BodhiGold are only permitted to download 6-months of history. When you purchase a subscription you will be sent  historical data  on CD-Rom which will append seamlessly to the data you have downloaded during your trial period. To download 6-months of history refer to this tutorial:
 Download 6-months history

Information for Previous BodhiGold Users:
This new version of BodhiGold includes a feature that will populate any new directories automatically. This feature is turned on by default (Edit>Options>General). It works by checking your current Bodhi5 data directories to see if you have older historical data for the symbols you have recently chosen to download. If you do, it copies that data into the new directory format.

Information about updating a group of ranked stocks:
BodhiGold allows you to download symbols that are filtered by ranking. Every equity is ranked according to its companies Market Capitalisation. Market Capitalisation is the amount of stocks issued multiplied by the current closing price. The ranking is a dynamic value that is recalculated each time you download new information.
Please Note: market capitalisation information isn't available for every Exchange BodhiGold supplies. You will need to check with JustData support before configuring this feature.

There are two [2] ways you can update a group of ranked stocks.
[+] Selecting a ranked option from the product menu
You would choose this option if this is the only information you want to download from that Exchange. This is a static selection which means the list of symbols will remain unchanged until you refresh them.
[+] Filtering a ranked option into a directory
You would choose this option if you want to download other data from the Exchange as well as the Top? of shares. This is a dynamic selection which means the list will change everytime you do a Catchup with BodhiGold and the symbols are re-evaluated.

Selecting a ranked option from the product menu

If you select this option in the product menu it will configure this Exchange to only export this information to your database/s. All other symbols from this exchange will be ignored. In this tutorial I'll show you how to select the Top 150 equities trading on the Australian Securities Exchange.
  1. Open BodhiGold.
  2. Click on the Configure button. The Configuration screen will appear.
  3. In the Finance tab, click on the [+] sign next to Australia.

    BodhiGold: Selecting a Country

  4. Click on the [+] sign next to Australian Securities Exchange.

    BodhiGold: Select Equity

  5. The ranking feature only works with the Equity product list, so double-click on Equity to open this list.

    BodhiGold: ASX Equity List

  6. The ranking information is handled by the Bundle box. You can only select one of the options in this box. If you choose to select a ranked option by this method you will only download those selected equities and no others from this list. Therefore, if you want to download other ASX equities you will need to set the Bundle to All and go to Filtering a ranked option into a directory. If you are happy with this selection then continue on with this tutorial.
  7. Select Top100 from the Bundle box.
  8. Right-click in the Bundle box and select Top>Re-rank from the menu. This will re-rank the entire ASX Equity list using the last figures you downloaded with BodhiGold.

    BodhiGold: Re-ranking Equity list

  9. To change the selection to the Top 150, right-click in the Bundle box and select Top>Re-set.

    BodhiGold: Set to 150

Enter 150 in the box then click the OK button.

  10. This is now set and selected. When you do a Catchup in BodhiGold the 150 symbols will start downloading into the format/s you have selected.

    BodhiGold: Top150 now selected

Filtering a ranked option into a directory

Filtering a ranked list of symbols into a directory allows you to download more than just that selection. For example: you may want to keep watch on the Top 150 ASX symbols but also follow the entire ASX Equity list. You can do this by filtering directories.
In this tutorial we are going to configure BodhiGold to update two EzyStation directories. One will contain the Top 150 ASX Equity symbols and the other will contain the entire ASX Equity list.
  1. Open BodhiGold.
  2. Click on the Configure button. The Configuration screen will appear.
  3. In the Finance tab, click on the [+] sign next to Australia.

    BodhiGold: Selecting a Country

  4. Click on the [+] sign next to Australian Securities Exchange.

    BodhiGold: Select Equity

Double-click on Equity to open the list.

    BodhiGold: ASX Equity List

  5. Select All from the Bundle box.

    BodhiGold: ASX Equity List

  6. Exit [x] the Equity list.
  7. Click on the Custom button to enter the Distribution screen.

    BodhiGold: Distribution screen

  8. If the Profile is set to Normal or Default then go to File>Copy Selected Profile as these two profiles can not be edited.

    BodhiGold: Profile

  9. Enter the name of the new profile in the box provided then click the OK button.

    BodhiGold: Enter Profile Name

  10. In this profile you will notice that there is already an EzyStation directory called: C:\Data\EZY\%Source%.

    BodhiGold: EzyStation Directory

The %Source% is a wildcard used by the software to filter symbols automatically into their Exchange directories. If you download symbols from the Australian Securities Exchange and the London Stock Exchange then %Source% is substituted with the 3-letter exchange code. This means two directories are created: C:\Data\EZY\ASX which contains symbols from the Australian Securities Exchange and C:\Data\EZY\LSE containing symbols from the London Stock Exchange.

  11. This directory will automatically filter all the ASX Equities into a C:\Data\EZY\ASX directory. Which is what we want for one of our directories.
Please Note: if you select any other products from the ASX menu (i.e. indexes, warrants or options) these will also be filtered into this directory. To stop this from occurring you need to set the 'Market' filter to Equity (refer point 16 of this tutorial).
  12. We now need to create our other directory for the Top 150 ASX Equities. To do this go to Path>Insert>EzyStation.
Type the directory - C:\Data\EZY\ASX\Top150 into the Insert Path box then click the OK button to add it to the list.

    BodhiGold: Adding a directory

  13. We now need to ensure this directory only contains the ASX Top 150 symbols. To do this, select our newly created directory (so it is highlighted) then click the Filter tab.

    BodhiGold: Filter tab

  14. The Filter tab has a list of options we can add filtering on. To filter the Top 150 ASX symbols into this directory we are going to use the following three filters: Source; Market & Ranked.
  15. To add a Source, double-click on the word Source: to display the Source Stage Editor screen.

    BodhiGold: Filtering the Source

Select Australian Securities Exchange from the second drop-down box then click the Append button then exit [x] the screen. You will notice that the Source now equals ASX. This means that only symbols that trade on the Australian Securities Exchange will be filtered into this directory.

    BodhiGold: Source = ASX

  16. We now want to add a filter to the Market option so only equity symbols are loaded into this directory. To do this, double-click on the word Market: to display the Market Stage Editor screen. Select Equity from the second drop-down box then click the Append button.

    BodhiGold: Market = EQ

When you exit [x] the screen you will notice that the Market now equals EQ. This means that only equity symbols that trade on the Australian Securities Exchange will be filtered into this directory.

  17. The final stage of filtering is achieved using the Ranked filter option. Double-click on Ranked: to display the Ranked Stage Editor screen. From the first drop-down box select is less than and in the next box type 151 then click the Append button.

BodhiGold: Ranked is less than 151

To set this filtering click the exit [x] button.

  18. All the filtering has now been applied. We have ensured that the C:\Data\EZY\ASX\Top150 directory will only include the top 150 ranked equity symbols that are trading on the Australian Securities Exchange.

    BodhiGold: All filtering applied

  19. You now need to exit [x] all the screens back to the main screen then click the Catchup button to create these directories.
