 Creating a database backup

These instructions will explain how you can backup your database/s in BodhiGold. If you do not have BodhiGold installed on your computer, please refer to this tutorial:  Installing BodhiGold

In version 5 of BodhiGold we have added a utility for backing up your database/s. This utility by default, will remind you every 30-days to do a backup.

BodhiGold: Backup reminder

If you answer Yes it will backup your historical data directories and any Portfolio's you've created in Bodhi5. By default, this backup is stored on your c:\ drive in a Backup directory (c:\Backup). We advise that you backup to an external drive or flashcard so if your hard drive fails you will still have a working backup.

The purpose of this feature is to backup your current database format/s so if you have a computer crash or corrupt your data you have a restore point. However, please be informed that you can always purchase an  historical data disk  from our offices [07-3821-5177] if required.

What do you want to do?:
[+] Change the frequency of reminders and where the data is backed up.
[+] Create a backup using BodhiGold.
[+] Restore from a BodhiGold backup.
[+] Copying a backup from one computer to another.

Change the drive where the data is backed up

By default the backup files are placed on your c:\ drive in a Backup directory. Obviously, if you have a hard drive crash you will lose your backup. For this reason we advise that you backup to an external drive. This could be either a USB flash drive or another computer [over your network] or a removable hard drive that is connected to this computer.
This external drive will display on your computer as a different drive [i.e. E:\ or F:\ etc.]. You will need to know this drive to continue with these instructions.
Please Note: If you don't have an external drive then you will need to copy your c:\Backup directory onto a CD-ROM.

  1. Open BodhiGold. Go to Edit>Options.

    BodhiGold: Backup Drive

  2. In the Backup Data section on the General tab choose the Drive where your external drive is located.

    BodhiGold: Backup Drive

Note about external drives: Please be aware that if you remove external drives or add more external devices to USB ports on your computer, you may find that when you plug the external drive back in, that a different drive letter has been allocated to it.

  3. You can also change the frequency of reminders by editing the number in the Warn if over ?? days box. Remember that you can only download 6-months of data from our servers so make sure the number you enter here is less than 180. If you set this to 0 days the warning message will no longer appear automatically and you will have to manually do your backups.

    Creating a backup using BodhiGold

If you want to manually do a backup of your database/s in BodhiGold, do the following:
  1. Open BodhiGold.
  2. Go to Tidy>Data>Backup.

    BodhiGold: Tidy Backup

  3. If you are backing up to the same drive that your data is currently stored on, a 'Warning' message will appear. Answer [Yes] to continue with the backup or [No] to stop the backup. If you want to change your backup drive, refer to the instructions above.
  4. If you answered [Yes], BodhiGold will start backing up all your data to a Backup\Todays date [YYYYMMDD] directory. If you download a lot of data into multiple directories and formats this may take some time. You can not cancel this procedure once it has started.

    BodhiGold: Backing up Files

The bottom status bar will keep you updated with your backups progress.

Where are my backup files saved?:
All backup files are copied to a Backup/*YYYYMMDD* directory on your backup drive (as set in the Edit>Options>Properties screen). For example, if you did a backup on 31-Dec-2009 and you've set you backup drive to E: then Bodhi would have created the following directory E:\Backup\20091231. If you do another one on the 31-Jan-2010, Bodhi will add a E:\Backup\20100131 directory.
When you restore from a backup, you can choose any time point you wish to restore from. It is wise to store a few different backups in case you have a problem in your data that you didn't notice straight away.

    Restoring from a BodhiGold backup

Each time you do a backup with BodhiGold a new directory is created with today's date [Format: YYYYMMDD] and your backup is copied to it. You can restore from any of these directories.
  1. Open BodhiGold.
  2. Go to Tidy>Data>Restore.

    BodhiGold: Backup Restore
If a box appears saying, You need to backup your data first you have either never done a backup with this software; disconnected your external backup drive or your drive where your backup's reside has changed. Check that your external backup drive is plugged into your computer and that the drive letter hasn't changed. If it has, enter the new drive in the Edit>Options>Properties screen.

  3. A Choose Restore Point box will appear giving you a list of all your backup dates. Generally the most recent date is the one to restore from. Any dates older than 6-months are useless as you will not be able to update them using BodhiGold. If you have this problem you will need to purchase a new  historical data disk  to restore your data.
Select a date, by clicking on it then exit [x] the box.

    BodhiGold: Choose a Date

  4. Click [Yes] to the 'Warning' message. BodhiGold will start restoring your data. You can not cancel this procedure once it has started.
  5. Your historical data files will be copied back to your hard drive and your configuration files and download dates will be moved back to your restore point.
  6. When finished, click the Catchup button.
  7. Your database/s should now be up-to-date.

Copying a backup from one computer to another

You can copy the settings and historical data from one BodhiGold to another on a different computer. You may want to do this if you are upgrading your computer or just require a backup computer with the same settings.
To do this you need to create a backup on the first computer then restore it to the second computer.

    Backing-up on the first computer:

  1. Open BodhiGold.
  2. Go to Help>Upgrade. This will close BodhiGold and open the upgrader software.
  3. Click the Start button. This will upgrade your BodhiGold to the latest available version. When finished, exit [x] the upgrader.
  4. Insert a memory stick (flash drive) or removable hard disk into your computer. Your computer will allocate it a drive letter (i.e. E, F, G) - take note of this drive.
  5. Open BodhiGold.
  6. Go to Edit>Options. On the General tab in the Backup Data section you will see a Drive drop-down box. Choose your removable drive (step 4) from this drop-down box then exit [x] the Properties window.
