FAQs

What type of Investor uses Insight Trader?
Insight Trader is used by a wide range of investors around Australia with a variety of investment requirements. It is used by long-term investors in the sharemarket using end-of-day data, short term traders using a live data feed to produce up to the minute charts - even day traders, and options and futures traders. It is also used professionally in the broking industry and by journalists and educators.
Is Insight Trader suitable for people new to charting or only for expert technical analysts?
Although it offers a wide range of sophisticated features, Insight Trader has been designed to be easy to use, even by novice investors. For example, you can use it in its simplest form to plot basic charts of shares and indices. However, with experience, you can gradually develop expertise in the use of its many advanced techniques of trading analysis.

What are "Saved Charts" and how can they help me?
"Saved Charts" lie at the heart of Insight Trader. These provide you with the ability to save complex chart studies to disk for later recall. A chart can be drawn up initially, with whatever indicators, oscillators (up to a total of 9 stacked under the main price chart), moving averages, trendlines etc you require. Other charts can be added to the same screen up to a total of 506 displayed simultaneously. Comments may be typed on the charts and cycle grids may be set. You then save this complex charting study to disk giving it a descriptive name. You can then recall it at any future time by moving a cursor to select its title from a list other saved chart titles. This will recreate the chart as it was saved originally, complete with your notes, trendlines, cycle grids and other constructions. If you have added additional data to the database, or altered existing data since the study was saved, the saved chart will be updated with this new information. Furthermore, you can also include additional notes, lines and text at any future time (or delete selected ones) and save the modified chart again to disk.

You can have up to 100 000 such saved chart arrangements with up to 506 charts per arrangement, each with their trendlines, text, cycle grids, and other constructions. You will find that saved charts become central to the operation of the program. Once a number of standard studies have been set up as saved charts, you will find yourself calling these up time and time again for inspection, analysis and selective modification as the database is updated. Obviously this saves you a tremendous amount of work and effectively eliminates the need to print out charts except where hardcopy is absolutely essential e.g. for situations where the computer is unavailable. You can also set the computer to automatically cycle through your saved charts as a continuous slide show.

What facility is there for drawing trendlines?
The trendline facility on Insight Trader is extremely versatile. You can draw trendlines in any of 10 different colours or as dotted lines of different textures and you can move these bodily around the screen (not just one end) to exactly where you require. Either end can be raised or lowered before being finally set in position. Once set, trendlines can be lengthened or shortened (for example, this is very useful in a replay screen as more data is added to the database) or they can be selectively removed.

How is Insight Trader intimately linked into the Australian Stockmarket?
Every copy of Insight Trader contains an internal database of fundamental information on every company on the ASX. This information includes the company code, its name, its main activity and the numerical subsector as classified by the ASX. This means that you can rapidly access securities by either their ASX code, their name, or their ASX subsector. It also allows you to rapidly view a slideshow of charts of e.g. all the banks, or all the gold explorers on the board with just a few simple keystrokes accessing your database of price and volume information supplied by your data vendor or manually entered yourself.

Should you wish to maintain this information updated at regular intervals, you can subscribe to the optional Database Manager for a small fee. This will also provide you with additional fundamental information of Earnings per Share, Dividends, Net Asset Backing and Franking allowing the program to calculate the very important fundamental parameters of PER, Dividend Yield, Price to Net Asset Backing Ratio. Together with the optional Systems Module this will allow you to automatically "trawl" your database for securities satisfying both technical and fundamental criteria to identify potentially undervalued companies that may have been overlooked by the market.

It will also carry out the involved housekeeping of your database by adjusting your charts for issues, splits, reconstructions, premium and capital returns. It will also merge the appropriate files where there has been name changes or where deferred delivery securities have been issued.

What is your policy on upgrades?
Insight Trader is being regularly upgraded and new features added. In keeping with our basic philosophy, as these upgrades become available they are offered to existing clients at the lowest possible price.

Would I be able to suggest improvements or extra features for future releases?
The recent release of Insight Trader version 14 was a major improvement and incorporated a large number of new features, many of which were the result of suggestions by users across Australia. Although not every suggestion can be incorporated, those likely to have general appeal will be seriously considered. Because Insight Trader is written in Australia for Australian conditions, you are able to talk directly with the developer to discuss any suggested improvements or additional features you would like to see included.

Can I get aftersales service?
Insight Trading offers you a hotline help service between 7:30 and 8:30 pm every weekday evening and from 9-11am Saturdays. For urgent requests outside of these hours we try to assist you as soon as possible.
